New Year, New Directions

In his 1939 radio broadcast Christmas message, King George the 6th famously quoted these lines from the poem “God Knows” by Minnie Haskins:
I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year,

“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”

And he replied, “Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the hand of God.

That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.”

Each year on the 31st December, I say these lines as the old year finishes and the new year opens before us. They give me encouragement to be bold in faith; to keep close to God by continuing with the simple disciplines of prayer, worship, Bible reading and Christian Fellowship; and of trusting him as my guide.

But how does guidance work? In my time I have met many lovely Christians who seem so worried and concerned about whether they have correctly “heard God” or whether they are truly doing His will. This can be a very distressing place for some and even one that hinders the full Christian life.

I wonder whether we make it all too complicated. It is interesting to note that there is no specific mention of guidance in the Bible, but plenty about God being our guide. It is also clear that God’s will for us is quite simple. God calls us to be like His Son. That is His will for us. So, if we are concerned about “doing God’s will” maybe we just need to keep asking this question: “Is what I am about to do or say or think going to make me more or less like Jesus?” And if we are worried about guidance, then follow the Christian disciplines of  prayer, Bible reading, worship and fellowship and trust that God is truly our guide and that as we make our decisions and choices and plans we are doing them in the light of His will….and then do them!

I have come to realise too that we know God as our guide best when we are in fellowship with others. Share your thoughts, your decisions with other Christians. Talk with other Christians. Invite others to pray with you. And then take action.

For those who are wondering what God is calling them to this year and especially if you are wondering whether God is calling you to further service in His church, why not join with other Christians who are exploring the same question? We have a Vocations Enquiry  Day coming up on the 26th January. The details are on this website and you can book too from the website. A team of Vocations Advisers will be on hand to help you begin to discover what God your guide is saying to you.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year. I hope that you find God drawing you ever closer to His Son, Jesus. I hope that you truly discover God as your guide.
